What is the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter is MTE’s most advanced harmonic filter that provides improved harmonic mitigation and energy efficiency. Using our patented* adaptive passive technology, the filter adapts to various loads while providing optimized THID/TDD performance and cost savings.
How does the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter compare with other Matrix Filters?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter’s magnetics look very similar to other Matrix filters but the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter has lower kvar and fewer capacitors. In addition, resistors and cooling fans were removed. Harmonic mitigation is better than any other passive filters including earlier versions of the Matrix family and the AP’s performance rivals active filters.
How many capacitors are used with the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter?
One, three phase capacitor is standard on all 6A – 103A units. 128A – 403A, 3 single phase capacitors. 482A – 786A, 6 single phase capacitors. 850A – 1200A, 9 single phase capacitors. 1600A, 12 single phase capacitors. 2000A, 15 single phase capacitors. 2300A, 18 single phase capacitors.
How does it work?
The AP Harmonic Filter varies or adapts its impedance in response to changing loads: the highest impedance is at light loads and the lowest impedance occurs at maximum loading resulting in more consistent harmonic mitigation.
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter is new. Is it UL listed?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter, like all MTE filters, are UL, cUL, and CE listed.
What is the warranty for the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter?
MTE warrants the AP Harmonic Filter for a period of three years from the date of shipment.
What makes the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter better?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter uses a patented, unique approach to magnetic harmonic filter design by utilizing a revolutionary core steel “recipe” in the reactor. In addition, its integrated mechanical design makes it the most advanced passive harmonic filter on the market.
What voltages and current are available?
400 volts covering 6 to 1200 amps, 480 volts covering 6 to 2300 amps, 600 volt covering 6 to 786 amps, and 690 volts covering 52 to 636 amps are now available.
Are capacitor contactor options available?
Capacitor Contactor, Option 002 is available as a standard option on all 6A – 1200A filters. This option provides a contactor to disconnect the filter capacitor bank when the drive is not running.
What is the no-load KVAR and power factor?
The no-load KVAR ratio to load is typically 15% of the filter KW rating making it generator friendly.
What is the efficiency of the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter’s standalone efficiency exceeds 99% throughout the load range. A 6-pulse drive and Matrix AP Harmonic Filter can result in significant month to month energy savings.
How does the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter perform with a 3% phase voltage imbalance or 3% background harmonics?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter adapts very well to degraded utility conditions with only a slight degradation in harmonic mitigation, unlike transformer based12 and 18 pulse multi-phase drives.
Are the Matrix AP Harmonic Filters equipped with fans?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filters are convection cooled and designed to meet the same ambient temperatures as the existing Matrix filters. The NEMA 3R filters are designed to allow direct sunlight (solar heating).
Why were the resistors removed?
The new Matrix AP Harmonic Filter magnetic circuit is inherently damped to prevent any unpredicted resonance. Damping resistors are not used!
Are the Matrix AP Harmonic Filters compatible with generators?
Yes, the Matrix AP Harmonic Filters are compatible with generator systems when properly sized.
Is it possible to upgrade a Matrix D or G Filter to a Matrix AP Harmonic Filter?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filter has a special design that utilizes the new adaptive passive technology. No upgrade kits are available at this time.
What is the maximum ambient temperature for the Matrix AP Harmonic Filters?
Ambient temperatures are the same as existing filters; the open panel rating is 50C and standard enclosed filters are 40C. However, for environments that require a more robust package, MTE now offers a high endurance NEMA 3R enclosure for filter ratings 320 amps and higher, allowing an ambient temperature of 45C.
Are the other critical characteristics of the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter equal to the characteristics of other filters in the Matrix family?
Yes. Critical characteristics such as altitude de-rate, voltage boost/drop, service factor, efficiency, voltage offerings, and performance with unbalanced lines and background harmonics are equal to or better than those of other filters in the Matrix family.
When will the Matrix AP Harmonic Filter be available?
The Matrix AP Harmonic Filters currently available are:
400V, 50Hz, and 480V, 60Hz, 6-1200 amp
600V, 60Hz, 6-786 amp
